The information on this page is about steroids used in cancer treatment. At your next appointment, ask your doctor or asthma nurse what your total daily dose of steroid medicine is, from your preventer medicine and any other steroid medicines you’re taking. They can let you know if you should be carrying a steroid card. If you’re taking a long course of steroid tablets, ask your doctor or specialist for a referral to a specialist.

  • This might be from an infection, surgery or injury for example.
  • If growth is slowed, they might be referred to a specialist doctor for advice.
  • This is most likely to be a steroid medicine called prednisolone.
  • To prevent inflammation in your airways you need to use your steroid preventer inhaler every day, as prescribed.
  • They might also make it harder for your body to deal with an infection.

Get advice on your medicines, symptoms or travelling with a lung condition, or just call us to say hello. Talk to your GP about other conditions you have and medicines you take, like high blood pressure, stomach ulcer or diabetes. If you’re worried about any side effects, ask your GP or asthma nurse for advice as soon as possible. For example, if you have an upset stomach after taking steroids, your GP may suggest taking the tablet with meals or after food.

Bronchitis

If you’re having an operation, you might need to stop your steroids. Don’t do this without speaking to your doctor or surgeon first though, as in some cases you might be able to carry on taking them, and you may need to have your dose changed before the operation. Sometimes steroids can cause another condition known as Cushing’s syndrome. This can cause thinning of the skin, stretch marks, and the face to become rounder, but it usually clears up once steroids are stopped.

If you want to check that your medicines are safe to take with your medication, ask your Pharmacist or GP. This means that the effects of either medicine can be altered. It’s sometimes necessary for steroid tablets to be taken for longer periods. In these cases, you may be more likely to develop troublesome side effects.

How do steroids treat asthma?

Because you’re only taking them for a short time, they’re unlikely to cause harmful side effects. To prevent inflammation in your airways you need to use your steroid preventer inhaler every day, as prescribed. Whilst they do have side effects, untreated bacterial lung infections leave damaged lung behind which is more likely to become infected in the future. Whenever antibiotics are given, always use probiotics – this is to protect the gut and prevent opportunistic infections with candida or clostridium difficile.

Let your doctor or nurse know if you have any problems with your eyes. Talk to your doctor or nurse about any of these side effects. It can help to change a few things about when and where you sleep. Try to go to bed and get up at the same time each day and spend some time relaxing before you go to bed.

A few products do not have a marketing authorisation (licence) as a medicine and therefore there is no PIL. Don’t include any personal or financial information, for example National Insurance, credit card numbers, or phone numbers. And your symptoms are getting worse, or your child’s condition is deteriorating.

Thus, researchers finalised that steroids do not help improve patient-orientated or clinical outcomes in nonasthmatic acute bronchitis. The risk of inadequately treating an asthma exacerbation is highly likely to be worse than the risk from Covid-19 in most people with asthma. Current evidence supports up to quadrupling inhaled steroids from standard doses until symptoms improve in adults.

Tell your doctor or nurse if you have headaches, nosebleeds, blurred or double vision or shortness of breath. Around 5 out of every 100 people (around 5%) experience repthesport serious mental health problems when they take steroids. Let your healthcare team know if you notice any changes in your emotional or psychological wellbeing.

Tell your doctor straight away if you have sudden and severe pain in your tummy (abdomen). If you have epilepsy this could become worse when taking steroids.

Throat infections

And because the steroid medicine in your preventer inhaler is breathed in(inhaled), it goes straight down into your airways. This means very little is absorbed into the rest of the body. They stop symptoms from getting worse and lower your risk of having another asthma attack. The steroids used to treat asthma are known as corticosteroids.
